Pet therapy

Pet therapy teams have brought comfort and delight to hospice patients for nearly a decade. Thanks to a generous local donor, we continue to expand our pet therapy program.

Willamette Valley Hospice can reimburse pet therapy teams for training and certification expenses with a six month commitment to visit hospice patients. Training is offered regularly and pet therapy teams are certified through a variety of local training organizations. Become a pet therapy team, and you can serve in your own community and on your own schedule. Have questions? Just call our volunteer coordinators at 503-588-3600.

Steps to becoming a Pet Therapy Team at Willamette Valley Hospice:

  • Register for and attend a Willamette Valley Hospice volunteer training session (usually 1 day). More information about volunteer training and requirements can be found here.
  • Attend a local pet therapy training and certification program. Local trainers include My Dog’s Gym (which certifies through Pet Partners), Paws for Love, and Pure Joy Canine Therapy plus Cats.
  • Successfully complete the testing to receive your certification.
  • Get assigned your first client to visit!
